Story and Photos by James Walker

Polish jazz trumpeter Tomasz Stanko played before a standing room only crowd for two shows on Octomber 18th at the HotHouse and did not disappoint anyone. Playing with a group of superb sidemen (Marcin Wasilewski, Piano; Slawomir Kurkiewicz, bass; and Michal Miskiewicz, drums), Stanko held the crowd spellbound with his crisp tones during the 75 minute 2nd set.

This was truly a four star perfromance that could have only been topped by extended play by exceptional pianist Wasilewski. Don't get me wrong, Stanko had no problem sharing the center stage, I just wanted more solos from this fine pianist. Bassist Kurkiewicz and drummer Miskiewicz on occasion also displayed their exceptional skill.

Based on this performance, Stanko's return to Chicago will necessitate either a larger venue or an extended engagement. This quartet should be enjoyed by as many Chicago jazz fans as possible.
