JazzChicago's Song of the Year 2007
Wynton Marsalis - "From the Plantation
to the Penitentiary"

(Marsalis Music)
Wynton Marsalis
2007 was a great year for Jazz music. Joan Stiles combined Monk with Basie in a "brilliant" original number, while McCaslin and David Binney traded shredding saxophone lines on our #1 album. Enrico Rava's trumpet became the wind, while Ari Brown's "Richard's Tune" took us all back for a welcome ride on a blue train. Finally, in any other year, Blanchard's heart-wrenching performance on his "Levees" would have taken the prize, but Wynton's angry social commentary on the title track is, in the end, most unforgettable.

Terence Blanchard - Levees
