Rough Edges

Review by Jean Timmons

Not much roughness about the edges of this music. Pianist Alexandra Caselli reveals her classical music training, but it is used in service to jazz. Caselli established herself in the Reno-Tahoe area, playing in after-hour sessions in casinos. Since 1991, she's gigged in Los Angeles. Her musical vita includes performing in numerous festivals and shows with Little Anthony (of the Imperials) and Elton John's AIDA. She was also a member of bassist Jennifer York's quartet for sixteen years.

Reflecting that background, the program of this recording is rather eclectic, ranging from straight ahead to somewhat free and new age jazz to vocalese. All compositions and arrangements are Caselli's. The major musicians on this set are Caselli (piano), Jennifer Leitham (acoustic bass), and Randy Drake (drums). On the two selections with vocals, they are joined by Jonathan Dane, the vocalist, who also plays flugelhorn and trumpet on three selections altogether. Other contributors are Carol Chaikin (alto and soprano saxophones), Jennifer Hall (alto flute), and Brad Rabuchin (acoustic and electric guitars). A very easy listening recording and a very pleasing pianist.
