Story and Photos by James Walker

It's always nice to stop in Close Up 2 in the financial district to check out the sounds of "Smooth Jazz". On this particular evening , guitarist Buddy Fambro and his quartet was "holding court", to the delight of those assembled within.

Buddy was surrounded by bassist Chuck Webb, drummer Tyrone Blair and keyboardist Will Kurk. It was especially nice seeing bassist Webb swinging away on the electric bass as he's more often seen plucking and strumming on the acoustic bass. Chuck's one of those underrated sidemen who can play with the best of them. He's currently, completely a long stint in the pit of the Broadway production of Jersey Boys in Chicago.

Although only one short set was observed by this listener, it was on point. Vince Guaraldi's "Cast Your Fate To The Wind", taken from Buddy's "Higher Consciousness" CD was being played as I walked in the door. This was followed by Stevie Wonder's "Can't Help It". Will Kurk was at his best on this number. Will is such an energetic keyboardist , and he had his way on this tune.

With this being the Christmas season, the band favored the audience with the classic "O Tannenbaum". Buddy demonstrates his skill with the acoustic guitar on this number.

The set was closed out with Paul Desmond's classic "Take Five", which over time has become the signature song of Dave Brubeck. Buddy was in rare form playing the keyboard part with the electric guitar. The crowd was ecstatic.
